laughter & forgetting

***

how many petals does a forget-me-not have?

my memory is a bit like standing under the br
anches of the Spring Snow Tree, catching eve
ry of its perfect 6-petal blossoms and starting
each time hopefully with He Loves Me, until
by the chill of dusk i have remembered by Six
and forgotten by One so many times that each
shuffling step kicks up a soft swirl of lazy fra
grant rememberie, every sixth knowflake of
which alights with the pragmatics of the pred
ictable, cherry blossom, Not. (i may be odd, b
ut that number is endlessly, inexorably even.)

how many petals does a forget-me-not have?
