francis needed his periods of absolute seclusion and successfully enforced observance of a routine he imposed. he would appear only briefly for meals and nobody dared to approach him when he was at prayer. sometimes he forbade all contact and his food was left out for him at stated times.
yet though he jealously guarded the privacy and freedom from interruption he needed and seemed remote at these times, he was far more aware of those around him than they supposed.
